Nineteen-year-old Margaret Hale lives in London. Her life is turned upside down when her family moves to Milton Northern. It is a cotton-manufacturing town, which is at the centre of a workers’ revolution. At first, Margaret is hostile to John Thornton, a wealthy manufacturer; but over time, she begins to admire the way he rose from poverty.
